International Cell Phone Service
Using your own phone
Not all carriers even offer international cellular service and those that do are expensive. However, some travelers - specifically business travelers (and those who can afford to pay astronomical rates) appreciate the ability to be able to use their current phone and associated number seamlessly while traveling overseas. If your current carrier is based on the GSM system which is prevalent in most countries, your phone may, but is still not guaranteed, to work overseas. Most countries use
Renting a cell phone
window.google_render_ad();
Travelers who wish to stay in touch overseas often opt for renting a cell phone. While this may be a good solution, rates as well as options are numerous and varied
Buying a new phone
If you travel internationally once or more each year, you should consider purchasing
Unlocking your current phone
If your current phone is a GSM phone and happens to have the correct bands for overseas use, you may be able to use it overseas without having to pay your current carrier's high roaming rates. More likely than not, however, there is a "subsidy" code associated with your phone that enables it to work only with your current carrier. This is standard practice in the US and Canada. The good news is that most carriers can and will give you the unlock code. Check with them as certain conditions usually apply such as you have to have had service with them for a certain amount of time. You may have to insist a bit or even "remind" them to send you the code as they are not too keen on giving it to you since they would rather make the huge profits by charging you for roaming. If you do go this route and get an international or country specific SIM card and the unlock code, make sure that you test the SIM in the phone before you leave. That way if for some reason you have questions or the code doesn't work, it will be easier to resolve than if you are already abroad.
Conclusion
These are the main options for using a cell phone overseas. While there are a lot of variables, the good news is that there are also a lot of affordable choices. In sum, if your phone already works overseas and you do not care about the high rates or you positively need to retain your current phone number, then roaming with your current carrier is the way to go. If you want the convenience and security of a cell phone when you travel internationally but don't want to pay the high rates, then a pay as you go solution combined either with a rented or bought phone, is the way to go. Hopefully this guide has provided a bit of clarity on the subject of international cellular service. Cellphone GPS traffic monitoring
In a recent blog entry, I talked about my desire to "integrate" GPS with tracking technology to be able to determine traffic speeds and re-route accordingly.
Well, who knew that just a few days later I would be watching TechTV and they would demonstrate a product that is very close to what I was looking for!
A company called ZipDash works with NexTel phones (with GPS option) and displays a map on the Nextel phone with color coded arrows to indicate the traffic speed (green, yellow, red). (I believe it's a Java app on the phone)I mentioned in my blog that my "theoretical idea" of a P2P GPS traffic monitoring model would require users to have to "opt in" in order to receive traffic reports. Sure enough, ZipDash works on that principal. If you "opt in" to receiving ZipDash's traffic data, you must also let ZipDash track your cell phone location. Of course it is anonymous according to this quote from their website:
"Rest assured, the information we gather is completely anonymous. Nextel doesn't even allow us access to information such as your phone number. We don't ask you for personal information and we make protecting your privacy a top priority. "
It's only in California unfortunately. But this gives me hope that one day the New York/Connecticut Metro area will have it some day.

Cheap Cell Phones
A large variety of electronic items like fixed-line and mobile phones, cameras, calculators and personal entertainment gadgets are being churned out in high volume at extremely competitive prices by these companies. Even though the quality may not be on par with the kind of products that they are competing with, for all practical purposes the common man might find not much of a difference between these and the high-priced variety.
Another totally different scenario also exists where the same high-priced, high quality products themselves are sold for incredibly low prices. Sometimes they are even given away for free! But as one might guess, there is always a catch in these kinds of offers. These products are offered either at a low price or for free because they come bundled in a 'combo' offer. Every phone, be it fixed-line or a mobile phone, needs a service provider through which the calls are routed. The services offered by these service providers are normally charged whereas the phone instrument itself is offered free or at a discounted price when both are bundled together for a special offer.
Offers of this kind are area-specific since service providers differ from place to place and from country to country. The kinds of phone instruments that are popularly used also differ region-wise and country-wise. AS a result, these kinds of bundled offers are more or less localized in nature. The offers are also valid only for a short period of time before the next popular phone model takes its place.
So when people are on the lookout for a new phone at cheap rates, they have two options to choose from. They can either go in for a cheap-priced model from an Asian country or on the other hand, go in for the low-priced or free version of the high-priced model by purchasing it through a bundled offer available in that particular region.

Cheap GPS Cell Phones
So, what's the difference between a dedicated GPS device and a GPS-enabled phone? While a traditional GPS device uses orbiting satellites to determine your location, a cellphone with a GPS chip relies on a combination of satellite fixes and triangulation from cell towers. Another distinction is that the actual application, map and POIs reside on a separate server, rather than on the device itself. This means that your cellphone always has access to the most up to date maps and POIs—as often as the server is updated. Your phone communicates with this server whenever you request driving directions and other information. Your route is then calculated for you and sent to your phone along with maps, and even speech files that provide spoken street names. In addition, if your phone has a touchscreen or a QWERTY keyboard, it will make navigating the interface much easier.
VZ Navigator has a complete set of routing options, including fastest, shortest, and simplest. It also comes with vehicle profiles for Car/Motorcycle, Truck, Bicycle, and Pedestrian modes. Like many dedicated GPSs, you can choose to avoid highways, toll roads, and roads with HOV lanes.
TeleNav's GPS Navigator works in much the same way as Verizon's software. One unique feature is the ability to call in a location using a toll-free number. You can also use addresses and locations stored in your address book. Once you've subscribed to the TeleNav service, you can conduct trip planning on your PC via telenav.com, which offers a nice selection of free navigation tools.
Of course, to use these services, you'll have to pay a subscription fee. Verizon offers a free trial for 14 days; after that, you can use the service for $2.99 a day or subscribe for unlimited use for $9.99 a month. Be warned though: if you don't have a wireless data plan,
Many of our favorite phones have integrated GPS chips. If you're in the market for a new handset, you may want to consider one with this function. For Verizon, there's the new Chocolate, LG's VX8550, the waterproof G'zOne Type V, and the Motorola KRZR K1m. Sprint's K1m is also GPS-enabled. Other notable Sprint GPS phones include the Sanyo Katana II, Sprint Muziq LX570 and the Sanyo SCP-7050. Below you can find summaries of these phones and links to the full reviews. What are you waiting for? It's time to hit the road!

Open GPS Tracker using Cheap Cell Phone
Looks like the cheap prepaid Motorola cell phones that you can find at many of the convenience stores can be used for projects such as this Open GPS Tracker project. It would be interesting to make a device that worked like a poor mans LoJack.
"The Open GPS Tracker is a small device which plugs into a $20 prepaid mobile phone to make a GPS tracker. The Tracker responds to text message commands, detects motion, and sends you its exact position, ready for Google Maps or your mapping software. The Tracker firmware is open source and user-customizable. The current supported hardware platform is: * Tyco Electronics A1035D GPS module * Motorola C168i AT&T GoPhone prepaid mobile phone * Atmel ATTINY84-20PU AVR microcontroller"

Free GPS Software
An example of limited free GPS software can be found at GPS Utility. The downloadable freeware is limited 100 waypoints and 500 track points. (There are 65,000 of each in the registered version of their program.) The free program gives you a good opportunity to try before you buy, and this is the benefit of most free programs.
There are online sites that list various free GPS software and describe how to use the programs after you download them. Often individuals who have used the programs themselves develop the sites. These are great because they give you an unbiased interpretation of the benefits and disadvantages of the programs before you use them.
Using free GPS software you can download programs that allow you to retrieve and display aerial photos, topographical maps, USGS landmarks. There are programs available that allow you import scanned images and add latitude and longitude points and other data.
Free GPS software downloads are available for PDA units that are capable of communication with GPS receivers. With these downloads you can have a useful navigation assistant, location database manager, and GPS data converter.
Programs to manage GPS waypoint and route files are available for both PC and Mac users. The waypoints and route files can be saved or converted to various formats used by other mapping programs.
If you need to transfer information to and from your GPS receiver and your home computer or laptop there are several free programs that allow you to do so. There are also programs that allow Garmin GPS receivers to "talk" to one another.
Many of the programs listed here are directed at the hiking/trekker community, but there are also free programs available for auto GPS systems and marine navigational systems. I found a couple of marine navigation programs that allow you to download nautical charts and plotters.
There are free GPS software programs that allow you to download street maps that might not be included in your auto--navigation system. If you intend downloading in--vehicle software, make sure that it has audio capacity, an essential safety factor for motorists. One such program offers data for several countries with voice guidance in twelve languages.
Free GPS software is also available for downloading to your cell phone. This is mostly tracking software and can be phone specific. You might want to check with your carrier before downloading anything to your cell phone to make sure that it does not incur extra charges.
As satellites are constantly moving, it is helpful to know the optimal time for data collection in your area. There is free GPS software that includes an almanac to let you know the availability of satellites at any given time.
Some of the free GPS software is brand specific. Programs designed for a Garmin receiver may not work for a Magellan, so check out the specifications carefully, especially if you intend purchasing a registered version after your trial period. Other software works with most brands.
Anne King is a sports and recreation writer in Boise, Idaho. For a list of free GPS software, visit Maps GPS Info.com which also provides practical information on GPS and maps that everyone can use. The website includes product reviews and a maps/GPS glossary.

CECT T32 WiFi, GPS And Windows Mobile 6.0
CECT T32 WiFi, GPS And Windows Mobile 6.0
302.69 $
For the longest time, I've honestly felt that the Chinese iPhone clones have included every major feature from the original and then some. But, when the Nokia N95 became almost as popular as the iPhone, we were all waiting with baited breath for its clone. That's because the Nokia N95 has WiFi and GPS. We were hoping that one day these features would become standard in the clones. We already knew that CECT could pull off Windows Mobile because the current HiTune T68 includes it.
However, when the CECT N95 finally rolled out, it was a great phone full of great features and innovative design. In fact, everything was included - except WiFi and GPS. Although we understood that pricing kept some additions out, and we felt the phone was still a contender without them, we were still a touch disappointed.
Finally, though, there's reason to celebrate. The HiPhone T32 (the very latest version, and sometimes also called The Daxian X999) has finally included all three of these things as standard.
Of course, as always with the HiPhone you can: surf the web; email and text (WAP browsing, MMS and SMS messaging); take photos and video on the digital camera and video cam; enjoy Bluetooth; listen to and watch MP3s and MP4s; and use Java.
The one standard feature this one doesn't have is dual sim slots. However, it has improved the 2.0 mega pixel camera and added an e-book reader.
With the Windows additions like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as tons more third party software available, this phone has evolved into a little productivity powerhouse. And, in my testing, these additions do not slow the performance of the phone any. It is still zippy and intuitive. After all, it has an expandable memory of up to 2GB to work with.
Of course, we were bracing ourselves for the price. Current comparable clones without these new additions average around $150. So where does that leave this new version? Currently, it's between the low and upper $300s, depending on where you get it.
This price may fall as more become available, but I suspect that even with this price tag, these will fly off shelves because: the additions are too valuable to pass up; they were long desired; and they really do add so many more possibilities and applications to this phone. So, welcome to the party, T32. It's about time.

GPS Services for Cellphones
TeleNav GPS Navigator—Besides giving you spoken directions, TeleNav can spot traffic jams up ahead and suggest another route to your destination. It can help find 10 million points of interest, including parks, restaurants, and gas stations. The service is most widely available on phones from Sprint, which calls it "Sprint Navigation." But it's also made for a growing number of handsets from Alltel, Verizon, and AT&T.
USN.load('Loomia');
AAA Mobile—One of the paper-map companies that are making a move to wireless, AAA is adding its useful diamond ratings of points of interest, such as hotels and restaurants. AAA's guidebook information on this digital service also details many local attractions. And a single button will call AAA for roadside help while also sending your exact location, as plotted by GPS. Available on some Sprint and Verizon phones.
VZ Navigator—The service offers turn-by-turn directions and, like others, will announce the street name as part of the turn directions. Includes a hefty 14 million points of interest. It can also send directions to friends on their Verizon phone. The VZ is for Verizon, the only place this service is available. It's for use on most, but not all, GPS-capable handsets from Verizon.
Garmin Mobile—A series of navigation products that turn cellphones, smartphones, and laptops into navigation devices. For a smartphone with a GPS chip, about $100 buys maps, routing software, and points of interest. Other options through this company, like the $200 Garmin Mobile 10, include a GPS receiver for smartphones that don't have the GPS built in. Garmin also offers a $10 monthly network version for some standard Sprint phones.
TomTom Navigator 6—Aimed at turning smartphones and hand-held PCs into GPS devices. For $300, Navigator 6 includes maps on a memory card along with a GPS receiver that connects via Bluetooth. The $250 version puts the maps on a DVD, requiring a PC to move them to the phone. The $150 version does away with the GPS receiver (if your device already has one built in).

Cell Phone GPS Tracking
Although there are many advantages to cell phone GPS tracking, there are also privacy concerns. As most people carry their cell phone with them at all times, the ability is in place to track the exact movements of all individuals. Is this a case of Big Brother, and who can access to this information?
Cell Phone GPS tracking can prove useful in many walks of life and especially when an emergency arises. Picture the scene of a road accident where injuries have occurred. A 911 call made from a GPS cell phone would significantly speed up the arrival of the emergency services if the GPS signal from the cell phone can be pin-pointed to an exact location. This feature alone could save many lives.
For these reasons the FCC has instructed that wireless network providers provide the cell phone GPS tracking location information for 911 calls which have been made from cell phones. This is known as E911. In essence this is no different than a 911 call made from a land line, as the land line is registered to an address and the relevant emergency services can be quickly dispatched to that address.
However, where the difference occurs is that a property does not move but the tracking of a GPS cell phone is registering the day to day movements of an individual, and that has given rise to the privacy concerns of who can access such private information.
However, the relevant law relating to E911 is fairly explicit. It allows carriers to provide tracking location information to third parties for e911 emergency calls only, however not under any other circumstances whatsoever without the consent of the cell phone owner.
The privacy of cell phone GPS tracking has also been backed up by a number of recent court hearings. Recent court hearings have disallowed the requests of law enforcement agencies to obtain cell phone GPS tracking information from the cell phone companies for suspects. The courts have ruled that Congress have not authorized location tracking without actual evidence of wrongdoing and that probable cause is not sufficient reason for the release of records.
These events will ensure that the advantages of cell phone GPS tracking will not be compromised by privacy issues and that its long term future and usefulness is secured.

GPS Cell Phone - Portable Navigation and Safety
The need for a GPS cell phone? Picture driving an unfamiliar highway and witnessing a small red car careening off the road into a ravine. You pull off the highway and with your heart pounding you get out of your car to find the red Chevy about 80 feet below - upside down. You realize someone may be hurt badly. Fortunately you have a cell phone, as many people do. You call 911 but you don't know where you are other than on Route 95 about an hour north of Needles in the deserts of Nevada...
(Browse all the other GPS articles and features.)
Fortunately, the U. S. FCC (Federal Communications Commission) has mandated a program called E911. E(nhanced) 911 requires the location of any cell phone used to call 911 can be determined to within 50 to 100 meters. The law took effect at the start of 2005. That means cell phone manufacturers have incorporated a GPS receiver in virtually every cell phone. A side benefit of this law is now we have the combination of a cell phone and GPS which is good for two additional uses: 1) driving directions in your automobile and; 2) the ability to use a cell phone as a handheld GPS for out-of-car purposes.
